This is the progression of the kennel construction I have done since moving here to my little acerage paradise. The first kennel, below, for Fraser and Daisy was a rather large bare bones kennel with the lean-to and old doghouse from my old place.

Not long after the first kennel was built the need for more hastily built kennels (below) on not ideal land was undertaken. Daisy had by then left us, Moe had arrived, Fraser sadly had departed, and five puppies ruled the roost - at least the puppies had houses and space.

Last summer, 2002, a whole new arrangement was created and with a better use of land and resources a six kennel plan was built. The ground was bare boot sucking mud when wet and concrete when dry. All kennels faced due south and the summer sun proved very harsh indeed.

The new system held up well, though incomplete, and during the winter the south facing doghouses were greatly enjoyed by all! The problem of ground covering continued to vex.

A solution was found, after many ideas were explored, and, upon recommendation of a fellow breeder, spruce and pine wood shavings procured from the local lumber mill were liberally spread over the floor of the kennels and the companionway. It has turned into the "perfect" solution. Dogs are clean, I am clean - all is good.
The next problem was that of the summer sun. A neighbor had tried to grow ginsing in the area and after their attempt had donated the shade cloth to a local wildlife preserve. I asked where one could get such stuff and the neighbor promptly phoned the preserve to ask if they had any left over. The did and invited me to come and get some. I was given a panel 100 feet by 23 feet. Cut in half each 50 foot panel covered 3 kennels with lots to spare!

Of course this method of hanging the shade cloth is only temporary. What we have now is jokingly referred to as "The Six Ring Circus"!
A proper frame and hanging arms will be made to make the hanging in spring and the removal in winter a more easy task. The photo below also shows my handy gates.

Momma Moe and Berri seem to like the idea!

As I get things done I will post the results. Any comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
